Ok…let’s get this straight. I do not like to do laundry. BUT, I am NUTS about a new alternative soap I have been using all summer. It is AMAZING! Smells like fresh air AND best of all…it is indeed from nature! Soap Nuts. Yep…that is what they are called! So…you see why I am nuts?
MANY BRANDS OF LAUNDRY SOAP OUT THERE
There are many brands of soap you can purchase and as you know we are all about natural. We don’t want to put anything bad into our bodies or on our skin, let alone into the pipes of our homes. It is important to educate yourself on ingredients not only in food but in products you use every day. Just think about it for a minute. You wear, sleep, bath, use on dishes your laundry soap! SO…should you know more of what is in it?
If you don’t have time, here is the NUT craze in a nutshell. (sorry couldn’t resist)
The Soap Nuts (I love these and the organic cloth bags Starwest Botanicals carries I use to put the nuts in and I also use these bags for my teas) affiliate links
*totally natural and non-toxic
*can be re-used 7 times
* you can travel with them
* unscented if you like that (recipe for liquid is at end of the blog)
*inconvenient-soap nuts need to be put in a sachet when used in the wash. Hey, need to dry out or else they will go moldy.
*if laundry is really dirty you will need to wash twice
*unscented so if you like the scent I just add essential oil to the soap nuts or directly into the water..works great.
If you prefer a liquid Laundry Recipe:
1 1/2 quart of water
30 Soap Nuts
Essential oil of your choice my favorites (Geranium,Grapefruit, Lavender, Rosemary, Sage, Orange, Ylang ylang
Pour hot water over the soap nuts and steep for 30 minuets to an hour. You can also steep overnight. After steeping, cover soap nuts and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain into a bowl and reserve the water. You will have a nice quart or more of liquid. You can reuse the soap nuts for another batch. You can skip the soaking and go straight to adding one and a half quarts of water. Simmer and strain. Once it has cooled add you’re essential oils.
Use 4-6 tbsp of liquid. I also add Borax powder because of our hard water.
Your clothes will smell like they have been blowing in a summer breeze! REALLY!

Chlorine bleach is doum hypochlorite, a solution of chlorine and diluted sodium hydroxide. Hum…first when exposed to air, the chlorine evaporates as a gas from the bleach solutions at a high rate, which is why there is such a strong smell with bleach. YUK. WHY do people want that in their homes? Those fumes can cause headaches and dizziness to internal tissue damage of the nasal pulmonary,, and bronchial tissues if exposed or prolonged. YUK YUK! Here is an article for you to read if you want to. https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/emergency/chemical_terrorism/chlorine_tech.htm
How safe is Hydrogen peroxide?
I recommend you read up on this It is important for your own knowledge!
Why add vinegar?
Vinegar is so easy to find and really it is used in most homemade DIY recipes so one usually always has it around the house. Vinegar has been proven to inactivate certain strains of the flu,(http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0008987) including H1N1 as well as others.( http://www.aciscience.org/docs/alternative_hard_surface_cleaners.pdf)
From this article an executive at Heinz http://www.greenchicafe.com/vinegar-green-cleaning-101) ( pure 5% white vinegar will kill approximately 99% of bacteria 82% of mold, and 80% of germs when used for cleaning.
Your very own DIY Bleach
Mix in an amber spray bottle
1 cup of hydrogen peroxide (3% solutions)
½ tsp Tbsp citric acid
1 cup water
½ cup apple cider vinegar “mother” on a label
5 drops of Lemon essential oil (or any citrus blend)
Store in dark place as light will weaken the solutions. Lasts up to 2-3 months in dark bottle.
I also use this ¼ cup in my laundry in whites. You can test it on your colors if you like. I haven’t yet tried it really don’t need to with the DIY detergent I use.
